In her keynote address, Slovenian president Nataša Pirc Musar said that this day should cherish the memory of all the people who fought for Slovenian territory but also serve as a reminder that having our own country should not be taken for granted, but that it’s a legacy which we must handle with care. On 15 September 1947, the Paris Peace Treaties made the Upper Soča Valley, the Vipava Valley, the majority of Kras, a large part of the Istrian peninsula, and several islands in the Adriatic Sea a part of what was then Yugoslavia. Still, several villages with Slovenian population remained a part of Italy. Slovenia started celebrating the anniversary of the Paris Peace Treaties in 2005.
