The train was heading from the spanish capital Madrid towards the touthwestern port of Ferrol, when it derailed near the famous pilgremage site of Santiago de Compostella. The train had 247 people on board. According to last reports the death toll rises to 80. At least 140 people were injured. Media reports say the train was travelling at more than twice the speed limit around a curve.
The desaster in Santiago de Compostella happened just days before the renowned festival of Saint James, when thousands of Christian pilgrims from across the world pack the streets.
The city's tourism board said all festivities, including the traditional High Mass at the centuries-old cathedral, had been cancelled as the city went into mourning following the crash.
