Germany is the first bilateral visit of the Prime Minister Marjan Šarec abroad since he took over the position. As he announced, he is headed to Berlin, where he will visit Angela Merkel in order to present her Slovenian views and expectations, but above all, he will ensure that Slovenian foreign policy does not change.
Angela Merkel praised Slovenia for doing an excellent job in protecting the Schengen border. She also offered to help in the resolution of the Slovenia-Croatia border. As she said, among all of the burning issues, it is time to solve this one as well. However, she does not want to discuss this publicly.
As we know, Germany is one of the loudest supporters of the arbitration tribunal’s decision, however, in Berlin, they always stress how difficult it is to understand that two countries cannot agree on a court decision by themselves. The two countries cannot expect some kind of initiative or interference from Germany, because the dispute must be resolved without us, believes Berlin. Angela Merkel has already discussed this issue with Croatian Primer Minister Andrej Plenković and the former Prime Minister Miro Cerar.
The Slovenian Prime Minister emphasized in Berlin that right now, they can discuss only the implementation of the arbitration. He added that Slovenia does not want to be a country of “only one problem”, but wants to be involved in all the burning questions EU has to deal with. In the light of both Brexit and migration issues, Šarec also called for more solidarity in Europe.
