August 17 is a holiday, known as Prekmurje day

The Republic of Prekmurje existed for one week. It was established after the First World War, in May 1919, when it tried to declare independence from Hungary. Within a few days, the republic was taken over and for a while the region was connected to Slovenia. But its fate remained contested for a few years until after the Second World War, when it was reunited with Slovenia. August 17 is still a holiday in Slovenia – known as Prekmurje Day, although the official holiday name is the much longer: “day of union of Slovenes in Prekmurje with the motherland after the First World War.”
