Nature preservation in Slovenia goes back more than a century. In fact, the beginnings could be traced to 1892. In that year, a man named Dr. Leopold Hufnagel declared that parts of the forest around Kočevje should be left alone. His plan forbade any use of the forest whatsoever, and the virgin forest of Kočevje remains intact.
