Has a Slovene ever won the prestigious Nobel prize? It's a bit of a difficult question to answer. One candidate comes to mind: Friderik Pregl, who won for chemistry in 1923. Pregl was born in Ljubljana, but at the time the city was Austro-Hungarian. His parents were also of different ancestry: his father spoke Slovene and his mother spoke German. The best way to describe him would probably be Austro-Slovene. Either way, he remains Slovenia's only claim to the nobel prize - until we see who will claim the Nobel Prize from an independent Slovenia.
