Idrija is famous in Slovenia for its long tradition of lace-making. In fact, Idrija lace first appeared in historical records centuries ago. But did you know that the first lace making school actually opened in Ljubljana in 1764? It was established by the Empress Maria Theresa. But it only lasted a few years before closing down. More than a century later, Idrija established its own special lace-making school – and that one continues to this day.
The tradition thus remains alive, and Idrija still hosts a lacemaking festival every year.
