Slovenia suffered heavily from the Second World War. The country had nearly 100,000 casualties, including a small Jewish population that was almost completely destroyed. An enormous number of Slovenes were also interned in concentration camps. According to some estimates, more than 30,000 Slovenes were interned in Italian camps in Rab and Gonars – or roughly 8% of the population. The end of the war brought no end to the violence, as thousands of anti-communists and collaborators were killed in the aftermath. The wounds of the war and its aftermath are still present in Slovenia today.
