The monastery was established in 1403 and is one of only 25 existing Carthusian monasteries in the world. Its famous brandy has been produced for 60 years. Nine monks cook it with the help of some laypeople. The pears are grown in the monastery orchard. It is twinned with the French Grand Chartreuse monastery, which produces the famous liqueur Chartreuse. Slovenian monks hope to be able to repeat the success of the French monastery.
