People have been living in Ljubljana since 2000 BC

The lands that are currently in Slovenia have at times belonged to numerous states and empires. Before Slovenia finally achieved independence, parts of the country were in the Roman Empire, the Frankish Kingdom, the Holy Roman Empire, the Habsburg Empire, the French Empire, as well as multiple versions of Yugoslavia. People have been living in the Ljubljana marshes since 2000 BC. That means it was about 4000 years until the city that stands there today would be the capital of an independent country.
