Words in English, French and German almost always require a vowel: A, E, I, O, or U (and sometimes Y). Slovene, however, has plenty of words without vowels. Interestingly, many of them are related to gardens. In fact, garden (VRT) is one. So is TRN (thorn) and KRT (mole) and Čmrlj (bumblebee).Slovene gets around the lack of vowels because the “R” can carry a vowel like -ER sound. And what’s the longest word in Slovene without a vowel? It’s another garden-related word. It’s VZBRST – bloom.
