Like many European languages, Slovene is divided into feminine, masculine and neuter nouns. So, a woman is “tista žena” and a man is “tisti mož”. Bizarrely, however, “girl” is neuter. It’s “tisto dekle.” If it’s hard to wrap your mind around the idea that a feminine human being is gender-neutral, don’t worry. Even though it would be technically correct to use the word “it” (ono) to describe a girl, Slovenes generally don’t.
