What do Slovenes eat more than anything else? The answer is bread. According to the most recent data, Slovenes eat about 40 kilos of bread a year. While that may sound like a lot, its popularity has been falling. When Slovenia declared independence, the average Slovene ate more than 60 kilos of bread a year. That means Slovenes today eat 30% less bread than 20 years ago. They also eat much less potatoes than they used to. The amount of rice and pasta, however, has remained the same. And while 20 years ago, beef was the most popular meat in the country – that has since changed to poultry. But one of the biggest changes since independence has been chocolate. Around independence, the average Slovene ate 2 kilos of chocolate a year. Now it’s double that. Slovenes eat 4 kilos of chocolate a year.
