Pleterje is the only Carthusian monastery in Slovenia

The Pleterje Charterhouse is a one-of-a-kind building. It’s the only Carthusian monastery in Slovenia. There are only 400 Carthusian monks still left in the world, and only a few in the charterhouse near Šentjernej. Their goal is to find God in solitude and silence. The few monks there work on 30 hectares of land where they produce honey and their famous pear brandy. The pear brandy is striking because the entire pear is in the bottle when you buy it. This trick is done by putting the bottle OVER the pears while they are still on the tree, and letting the pear grow to full size inside the bottle. The pear brandy and other products from the monastery are available in stores and even online. The monastery is not open to visitors.
