But this will not be enough, a new round of demanding discussions with parliamentary groups awaits him. A candidate who will enjoy the majority support of Parliament – at least 46 votes – needs to be found. This will be a difficult task given that Slovenia now has a minority government. If the coalition is to have its candidate at the head of the Bank of Slovenia, not only will it have to vote as one, it will also need the support of at least one more party, most probably the Left or NSI.
The second problem is the candidates. Five candidates applied in the first round. They all had sufficient professional credentials, but lacked sufficient political support. As potential candidates in the second round, the media has mentioned primarily the economist Igor Masten and the chief economist at SID bank Damjan Kozamernik. Both have confirmed for the radio that they would be interested in the position of Governor, but only if they had sufficient political support. Which means it’s now all down to politics.
