If you’ve seen the Slovenian flag, you know that it has three horizontal stripes: white, blue and red. Because the pan-Slavic movement used these three colors, you might think that was the inspiration. But it wasn’t. The inspiration from Slovenia’s flag came from the medieval coat of arms of Carniola. That’s how Slovenian students came up with the idea, back in 1848. The flag was a big success and it replaced the flag of Carniola that was in place at the time: a blue and white flag. The flag has had changes, but the three colors have remained ever since.
