When it comes to financial damage from natural disasters, Slovenia’s podravska region has been the unluckiest recently. From 1999 until 2009, the region has suffered some 158 million euros in damages. The region, which includes Maribor has about 300,000 people living in it, also had the most expensive damages of any region in 2008, when storms and hail the size of tennis balls did nearly 60 million euros in damages – nearly half of all the damage in Slovenia that year. The bad news is that the damage done by natural disasters seems to be on the rise in the entire country. In 1999, natural disasters caused 40 million in damages - that number hasn’t been seen again. Since then, the damages have been around double or triple that.
