It’s harder to find a place on Earth more beautiful than the area around Kobarid in western Slovenia. Known in Italian as Caporetto, it was also the stage of some of the worst fighting in World War 1. The Battle of Caporetto was the twelfth battle of the Isonzo (known in Slovenia as the Soča) which claimed around 200,000 Austro-Hungarian casualties and around 2 to 3 times as many Italian casualties. It was made famous in literature by Ernest Hemingway, whose book “A Farewell to Arms” takes place during the time.
