No Slovenian writer has won the Nobel Prize for literature. But a Yugoslav writer did. In 1961, Ivo Andrić, the author of the book “The Bridge on the Drina”, won the prestigious award. However, although many people have heard of the famous writer, they don’t know that he spent some unhappy time in Slovenia. During World War I, the young Ivo Andrić was arrested by Austrian authorities and jailed in the city of Maribor. In fact, remnants of the prison can still be seen today, close to the popular shopping center Europark. We can assume that Andrić would be quite happy that the prison he was held in, is in ruins now.
