Back in 1895, there were about 30,000 people living in Ljubljana. (That’s about the size of Nova Gorica today). A terrible surprise greeted the residents of Ljubljana on April 14: a 6.1 magnitude earthquake hit the city. The aftershocks were felt as far away as Florence and Vienna. And although few people died, the city lost 10% of its buildings – something that has affected the city to this day. Namely because, in the aftermath, Ljubljana rebuilt itself, which is why so many of the city’s most prominent buildings and bridges are in the Art Noveau style.
