According to the Food and Agriculture Association, the largest winegrowers in the world are Italy, France and Spain. Each of them have at least 8,000 square kilometers of land dedicated to growing grapes, the vast majority of which goes into wine. Every year, France makes about 50 to 60 million hectoliters of wine. Slovenia, by comparison, makes about one million hectoliters. However, Slovenia can still lay claim to the oldest vine in the world, which is currently in the middle of Maribor. Even more amazingly, the 400-year-old vine is still active, and about 100 bottles of the wine are sent as gifts to dignitaries around the world every year.
