Slovenia has one nuclear power plant, which is located in the town of Krško. But it was originally supposed to have one more. In 1970, Yugoslav authorities agreed to build two nuclear power plants in each of the member republics. That idea met with public opposition, and in the end, only Krško was built. There are no nuclear power plants anywhere else in the former Yugoslavia. However, Krško is jointly run by Slovenia and Croatia and provides enormous amounts of power to both countries. It supplies a full 25% of Slovenia’s energy needs, and about 20% of Croatia’s. It is expected to retire in 2023.
