The Sava River is nearly 1,000 km long and begins in Slovenia. It’s also one of the few rivers that winds through 3 European capitals. In this case, it skirts around Ljubljana, goes through Zagreb and then to Belgrade, where it connects with the Danube. It has the occasional habit of flooding: In 1964, the Sava went almost all the way to Zagreb’s center, and in 1981 and again in 2006, Belgrade was flooded. The Sava doesn’t actually come close to Ljubljana’s center, but rather its outskirts. It does go through Kranj and its closeness to Slovenian hearts was also cemented by Prešeren’s epic poem “Baptism on the Sava.”
