At the beginning of the 20th century, Slovenia saw a huge migration. Hundreds of thousands of Slovenes left for destinations all over the world. One popular choice was the United States, which still has a sizeable population in Cleveland. But they also went to South America, Germany, Egypt and elsewhere. In the 30 years from 1880 to 1910, roughly 300,000 people (or roughly the entire population of Ljubljana) packed up and left. At the time, that meant one in six Slovenes moved away. But the communities they started around the world mean that there are still little pieces of Slovenia all over the world.
